More About Our School

Recognition of student achievements, participation and caring behaviour occurs weekly in our Friday "Student of the Week" at which time each class recognizes one child. End of year awards acknowledge student achievement as well.

These include awards for

  • Humanitarianism
  • Citizenship
  • Academics
  • Athletics

The Catholic School Council, through parental donations and money donations by the Catholic Women's League of the Pro-Cathedral, maintains a "Food for Thought" cupboard. Snacks and drinks are used to supplement lunch for children who may need something extra to eat.

The Catholic School Advisory Council (Parent Council) at St. Alexander School offers a Student Nutrition Program. A healthy (nut free) snack is provided for each student every Monday and Wednesday morning. Nutrition is an important contributor to healthy child development. Children and youth spend a significant amount of time in school and make schools an effective avenue to reach them and influence their nutrition knowledge, skills and behaviors. St. Alexander School thanks its many volunteers who participate in and run the Student Nutrition Program.

Community Relations

Our school makes use of community resources such as the Catholic Women's League, the Museum, the neighbourhood Bourke Street Rink, and the Curling club. We use a variety of community based programming to augment the curriculum

  • Visions (anti-violence)
  • Vision - one to one counselling
  • D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)
  • Walking the Path (Ojibway: esteem-building)

Our staff welcome the resources brought by volunteers and "co-op" students from our Catholic high school and Faculty of Education students from Nipissing University.

Catholic School Advisory Council

Chair: Mitch Monette

The St. Alexander Catholic School Council functions as an advisory body to the school principal and Board especially with reviewing Board policies.

Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month.

How We Live Our Catholic Faith

St. Alexander School is a Catholic faith-based learning environment in which all members of the community (staff, students, parents, parish) are encouraged to live out the Gospel values of love, peace, justice, faith, hope, life, community and dignity and value of all persons. Our strength is our people: staff who are committed to modeling, promoting and integrating the faith of Jesus into the day to day curriculum and social fabric of the school; families who strive together to create "community" and parish personnel who share their faith with the children, staff and parents.

We try to live our faith through classroom and school-based liturgical celebrations which occur year-round. Programs such as Rainbows show compassion and hope for those children who have grief issues. We try to act out our sense of social justice in the wider community through activities for charitable organizations such as Terry Fox, Food Bank, Operation Christmass Child, CNIB, Kids Helping Kids, MS, Diabetes, Together for Autism, Holy Childhood Association, etc.
